Where can we go to improve our knowlege and skills in the Arts? For a start, I would like to recommend the activities for visual artists organised by TAS at Cullford House. Can anyone suggest other contacts in any of the Arts? Cheers Des

Profile Information

What are your main interests/activities in the Arts?
Personally, I'm aiming to develope myself as a visual artist. I work in a variety of media and subject matter but am currently focussing on portraits and figure studies in acrylics. I have found attending LIfe Classes with TAS a great help in this.

I am also interested in the Arts more generally. I met my wife in The Villanova Players, an amateur theatre group with very high standards and we continue to enjoy live theatre and films as well as being avid readers. I am a committee member of Arts Council Toowoomba.

A Bit about Me

When I was a kid, I thought quite a few things might be good careers. Among these was becoming an artist. As someone pointed out to me, this is different from wanting to draw and/or paint all day.

Anyway, after doing a couple of years of Science at UQ (Geology and Mineralogy were my best subjects!) I went to Kelvin Grove Teacher's College and became a High School Science and Maths teacher. I switched my studies to Education, then Arts, getting a B.Ed and a B.A. in Literature and Geography.

A few years later, partly because of my hearing loss, I retrained as a librarian at QIT. I served in various postions in this role, including User Education Librarian at Kelvin Grove Campus and running the Library and the Computer Centre at Emerald Agricultural College.

Learning to use a library does great things for your ability as a student. A few more years down the track, I had managed to get a Masters in Educational Studies, focussing on Educational Social Psychology.

Nowadays, I am living with my darling wife Mary in Toowoomba. I still get occasional calls to teach in local High and Primary Schools. I also serve as a commitee member for Arts Council Toowoomba. Mostly, however, I am focussed on establishing a new career as an artist. Check me out at www.djharts.squarespace.com

Moving House

Mary and I are moving to live in Caloundra next Tuesday (8th Dec 2009). Toowoomba has been very good for us during the past five years, but we both feel it is time to move on.

I hope to be even more busily involved in my art activities on the Sunshine Coast, but not too busy to keep at least one eye on this website and what is going on in the Arts in and around Toowoomba.

Please feel free to contact us.

Cheers

Paint your own masterpiece online

There are sites on the Net where you can paint online. If you want to know how I did this one, take a look at ARTPAD.

Please do not add to it. PAINT YOUR OWN

Cheers

Thanks Des, I started more realistic, then decided to play, with my hands, and anything else that was handy...so to speak. I guess it is about trusting the child within and allowing it to come out and express and play without judgment for the worst critic of all and that is that inner critic that is in us all. The trick is to have fun with no thought about outcomes, then look at the work for what it is and go with it....I of late have been tempted to go back to traditional....it is all a matter of learning and growing....most of all though enjoy. I love what you are doing so I would say it is right for you at this time....catch you soon...cheers Kym

Hi Des,
It's good to be here. This happy snap was taken outside the Shakespeare's Globe, London. I am currently enjoying the cultural delights that the UK and the rest of Europe has to offer before I return to Toowoomba later this year.
